Inspire - High potential and gifted education

At Black Mountain Public School, our small class sizes mean we truly know each child and tailor learning to their needs, especially for gifted and high potential students. Unlike larger schools, we provide personalised attention without sacrificing rich opportunities. Gifted education is embedded in daily lessons, with clear learning intentions, success criteria, and frequent check-ins to ensure the right level of challenge. EAL/D and learning support staff work alongside teachers to create inclusive, supportive classrooms.

A key advantage of our small school is that all senior students have meaningful leadership opportunities. In this close-knit community, every senior student can take on leadership roles and contribute actively to school life—experiences often harder to find in bigger schools.

We nurture growth across intellectual, creative, social-emotional, and physical domains. Our students set goals, reflect on their progress, and enjoy the same opportunities as larger schools, all while benefiting from the personalised support that only a small school can provide.

What is high potential and gifted education?

Inspire – High potential and gifted education (HPGE) is how our school supports students with advanced learning needs.

We do this through:

Our high potential and gifted education opportunities

Our students engage with HPGE education in the classroom, in our school, and across NSW.

In our classroom

We are committed to recognising and nurturing high-potential and gifted students, ensuring every student can thrive at our school.

Our staff regularly use differentiated tasks within their programming and teaching, adjusting pace, tasks, and complexity to meet students’ individual needs. Thanks to our small class sizes, teachers can closely monitor and respond promptly to each student’s learning, providing personalised support that larger schools may find challenging.

Our teachers engage in ongoing professional learning to support the diverse needs of all students, including our high-potential and gifted learners, ensuring they deliver tailored and effective teaching in a close-knit, supportive school community.
